India: 32 killed, 20 injured in road mishap in western India
16-06-2012NEW DELHI, (Xinhua): At least 32 people have been killed and over 20 others sustained injuries in a major road mishap in the western Indian state of Maharashtra in the wee hours of Saturday, a senior police officer said.
"The mishap happened at 2:40 am when the bus in which the victims were traveling plunged off a bridge in the state's Osmanabad district. While 32 people were killed on the spot, the injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some people are serious," he said.
The death toll is likely to go up, the officer said.
All the victims were devotees going on a pilgrimage to a holy temple in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district when the mishap occurred. They were from the southern Andhra Pradesh state.
Andhra Pradesh's Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has expressed grief over the incident and has ordered the state administration to provide help to those injured in the mishap.
"A probe has also been ordered into the incident," the police officer added.
