Srinagar, J & K,India, (Greater Kashmir): Police on Friday detained the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Muhammad Yasin Malik, along with his supporters near Jawahar Tunnel on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway. Malik was scheduled to address a public rally in Banihal.


“When we moved out of the tunnel, hundreds of policemen were present there. We were arrested and lodged in Ramsoo police station,” Malik said.

Ramban district administration in an order has stated that Malik’s visit would have disturbed the ‘prevailing public peace, tranquility and communal harmony of the area.’

Recommending ban on the entry of Malik in the district, SP Ramban vide letter no. CONF/2012/3623/c dated 30-05-2012 had said that Malik’s speech would lead to law and order problem and inter-community clash as was witnessed in district Rajouri recently.

According to a JKLF spokesperson, Malik was also scheduled to visit the families of five persons who were subjected to disappearance in 2002.

The spokesperson criticized the government move and termed it as ‘blocking the peaceful ways of struggle so that violence will propagate and government will find a reason to crush the struggle of people.’

Others who were arrested include Noor Muhammad Kalwal, Showkat Ahmed Bakshi, Sheikh Abdul Rasheed, Sheikh Saleem, Bashir Kashmiri, Muhammad Yaqoob Rabbani, Sheikh Nazir Ahmed, Ghulam Nabi Kashmiri, Professor Javaid, Muhammad Hanief Rahi and others.
