Nepal: 6 teenage girls commit suicide after failing in exams
16-06-2012KATHMANDU, (Xinhua): At least six teenage girls have committed suicide across Nepal in the past three days after failing to pass the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination, whose results were published Wednesday evening.
According to various media reports, a 15-year-old and a 18-year- old girls in the capital Kathmandu consumed poison after failing in the exams. They were later declared dead. Another 16-year-old, who also consumed poison after learning that she failed in the exams, is currently receiving treatment in a local hospital.
Meanwhile, three girls out of the capital hung themselves to death after failing in the exams which is often called "Iron Gate" because of high percentage of failure of students.
Only 47.16 percent students have passed the SLC exams under regular category this year, which is 8.34 percent less than the rate of last year.
SLC examination is one of the most import examination in the educational system of Nepal, which every student must take for completing the 10th grade of their study before they join higher level education.
